Gyruss : Centuri/Konami 1983  Purchased 6/28/2003

Comments:

I bought this at the super Auction in San Jose.  I had been wanting a Gyruss for sometime, and this one ended up being really cheap, so I could not pass it up. I thought the monitor was a gonner, but after cleaning it and turning the brightness down a little bit, the picture is really nice.  After a bit of cleaning, and repairing some and painting the damaged areas, the game looks great.  Check out the restoration here.

I also use this cab to play my Time Pilot and Time Pilot 84 boards.

Additional Pictures Below
I got a great deal on my Gyruss at the Super Auction in San Jose.  It looked pretty beat when I brought it home, but it worked great.  All four of the corners and the area near the marquee had some cabinet damage.  I wish I took better pics of the damage, but if you look closely you can see in this pic that the corners have some damage.

First I got to work on building the corners back up with Bondo.

The corner below was the worst one.  This is after one pass with the Bondo.  As you can see there was a lot of wood missing,  but it was an easy repair with Bondo.  I cut the slot for the t-molding using a heavy duty cutting wheel on my Dremel.

The cab had some paint issues.  The black was real faded and it (or maybe a clear coat) was peeling.

I was able to clean it up real nice using the rough side of a sponge though.

I wanted to keep as much as the original side art intact as possible, so I made a template using mylar for a couple of the areas that needed to be painted.

Here is the finished product.  I cleaned the cp with Greased Lightning, polished the marquee and bezel with Novus 2, cleaned 20 years worth of dirt off the monitor, replaced the t-molding, and painted the marquee brackets as well as the parts of the cab that were repaired.  Next I will probably tackle the coin door, but for now I just want to play the dang thing.
